Amaia Calderon Larrañaga

I am Associate Professor and Research Group Leader at the Aging Research Center (ARC), Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS), Karolinska Institutet. I hold a degree in Pharmacy, a Master's in Public Health, and a PhD from the Department of Public Health at the University of Zaragoza (Spain).

Among other commitments, I currently serve as:

• Director of the KI Transdisciplinary Research Center for Personalized Dementia Prevention and Care (TraCeDem), a national research center funded by FORTE that brings together researchers, clinicians, and societal stakeholders to develop and implement personalized strategies for dementia prevention and care.
• Principal Investigator of the Swedish National study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K), one of Sweden’s major longitudinal studies on aging.
• Member of the Internal Leading Group for the National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR).
• Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Biziaria Longitudinal Study on Longevity and Care in the Basque Country, Spain.
• Member of the Executive Committee of the Nordic Gerontological Federation.
• Member of the Spanish Research Network on Chronicity, Primary Care and Prevention and Health Promotion (RICAPPS), National RICORS Program (RD21/0016).
• Associate Editor of the Journal of Multimorbidity and Comorbidity.
• Secretary General of the 27th Nordic Congress of Gerontology (2024).

My research focuses on multimorbidity, complex health trajectories, and the multidimensional care needs of older adults, with the aim of informing more integrated and person-centered health and social care systems. 

My work is carried out through national and international interdisciplinary collaborations that bring together epidemiology and public health, geriatric medicine, dementia research, health services research, and social care perspectives. I work extensively with large longitudinal datasets, national registers, and advanced epidemiological methods to understand how patterns of disease, functional decline, and social and care-related factors interact over the aging process.

My pedagogical activities include supervision of several PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, international visiting students, as well as master’s and undergraduate students. I coordinate the biannual PhD course “Application of Epidemiological Methods in Aging Research” within the Neuroscience and Epidemiology doctoral programs at Karolinska Institutet, and the freestanding course “Aging and Age-Related Disorders from a Biological, Epidemiological and Clinical Perspective”. I also lecture in several courses on geriatric epidemiology at the undergraduate, master’s, and PhD levels, including within the Master’s Programme in Public Health Sciences at Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University and the Psychology Programme at Karolinska Institutet.
