About me

  • I graduated from School of Medicine, University of Gothenburg in 1988. At the time of graduation, I became affiliated with the research group of my PhD supervisor to be, then Associate professor Bengt-Eric Skoogh, at the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. In 1992, I completed my PhD training while completing my internship at Mölndal County Hospital. In 1993, I brought my family to San Francisco and started my postdoctoral research training at the Cardiovascular Research Institute, Departments of Medicine and Physiology, University of California San Francisco, San Francisco, USA, with Professor Jay A Nadel as main supervisor. I completed this training in 1995 and moved back to Gothenburg for my clinical training in Respiratory Medicine. In parallel with this clinical training, I started supervising PhD students in my own research group at the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy. In 1998, I became Associate professor in Experimental Respiratory Medicine and in 1999, I became specialist in Respiratory Medicine, whereafter I initiated my clinical training in a second specialty. This training was completed in 2002, when I became specialist in Allergology and was invited as Visiting scientist to the Departments of Medicine and Pharmacology, University of Melbourne in Parkville, Australia. I brought my family there in 2004, to do research with Associate professor Gary P Anderson as tutor. In 2005, I returned to University of Gothenburg and worked as specialist in Respiratory Medicine. In 2006, I was appointed as full Professor with a combined position as Senior Consultant in Respiratory Medicine. The following years I led my research group and was responsible for organizing teaching in Respiratory Medicine for students at the School of Medicine, and in 2011, I initiated the clinical COPD Center at Sahlgrenska University Hospital together with the Head of the clinical department. In 2012, I was recruited to Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital, to my current position as Professor and Head, Division of Lung and Airway Research, Institute of Environmental Medicine, and Senior consultant and Head, Karolinska Severe COPD Center, Department of Respiratory Medicine and Allergy, Karolinska University Hospital.  My ongoing research focuses on the immunopathology of pulmonary host defence in inflammatory lung disorders, especially in tobacco smokers with and without COPD. Until date I have successfully trained 13 PhD graduates and 11 post docs.
