    Candidate in KI’s academic elections 2026 – the position of Dean/Deputy Dean for Doctoral Education

    After completing my PhD at KI in 2003 and six years of postdoctoral training and research at the National Institutes of Health in the USA, I returned to KI and the Department of Oncology-Pathology (Onkpat) to establish a research group in tumor immunology. I have supervised 25 PhD students, ten of them as principal supervisor. Between 2014 and 2023, I served as Director of Doctoral Education at Onkpat. Since 2023, I am Professor of Oncological Immunotherapy and faculty representative in the Committee for Doctoral Education (KFU). I am Assistant Head of Department at Onkpat with responsibility for higher positions, KI representative for a patient area within Theme Cancer at Karolinska University Hospital, and course organizer for a doctoral course in tumor immunology.

    My objective is to advance the quality of doctoral education by fostering inclusive, attractive, and discrimination-free environments. I am committed to driving strategic initiatives that strengthen innovation and global competitiveness, ensuring that the next generation of researchers can thrive and shape the future of society. I place strong emphasis on professional development for supervisors and doctoral students through structured training and peer learning. By leveraging KI’s scientific excellence, I aim to coordinate and deliver high-quality doctoral courses and research schools, expand access to mandatory and in-demand courses, and establish clear guidelines for compulsory educational components. Furthermore, I seek to deepen collaboration with Region Stockholm to create integrated research and educational environments. By harnessing digitalization and AI, I will develop advanced learning platforms that enhance quality and foster innovation in doctoral education. Finally, I am committed to promoting collaboration and engagement through joint forums, networks, and transparent communication, supported by broadly represented working groups to develop shared strategies.

Research

  • Our research focuses on understanding how the immune system is regulated in patients with cancer. With this knowledge we aim to develop improved immunotherapies in patients with cancer.

Teaching

  • Completed ten weeks of pedagogic training courses.
