Åsa Burström

I am an assistant professor and head of unit at the Department of Nursing (NVS, KI), where I also conduct research and teach in the Nursing Programme at both undergraduate and advanced levels. 

I defended my thesis in 2018, titled: 'Transition from Child health care to adult health care for Adolescents with Congenital Heart Disease'. My ongoing research is inspired by the findings of this work. 

My research interests focus on various aspects of health in adolescents with heart defects - including sexual and reproductive health- as well as the experiences of pregnant women with congenital heart disease (CHD) or those expecting a child with CHD. It also addresses the development of a person-centered approach during the preoperative assessment process. 

My research interest include health care transitions, knowledge about sexual and reproductive health in adolescents with heart disease, and the experiences of pregnant women with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) or those expecting a child with CHD. 

The current research:

FREIA-CHD (FeMale Reproductive & Sexual Health Experiences Intervention Adolescents & Adults) is a collaboration with researchers from University West, Umeå University, Karolinska University Hospital and South Africa. 

Development and implement of a person-centered approach during the preoperative assessment process in collaboration with researchers from Lund University

I have experience in education as a course coordinator in the Nursing Programme at both the undergraduate level and advanced levels. I have also supervised students on degree projects at both levels. 

In addition, I also serve as an examiner for the course 'Health and illness During the Course of Adolescence', at the advanced level.
