Johanna Berg

I am an Emergency Physician at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö and a affiliated researcher with the No accidents team, part of the Health Systems and Policy research group.

I completed my PhD in 2025 at the Department of Global Public Health at Karolinska Institutet. My PhD investigated if, and how, a trauma quality improvement programme improved mortality and quality of life among trauma patients in urban India.

My research focuses on health systems in relation to emergency care. I have a strong interest in simple clinical interventions that may improve care and patient outcomes, and in understanding how these interventions operate within complex adaptive systems. I work with clinical trials, as well as quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches to address these questions.

In addition, I work on related topics that use data driven approaches to support quality improvement, such as identifying patients with unexpected outcomes and developing better ways to categorise subgroups of patients based on injury patterns. I also work with projects related to disaster management - particularly understanding events that strain the emergency care chain.
