Hemostasis and Thrombosis – Mika Skeppholms research group

The research group conducts projects on hemostasis, arterial and venous thromboembolism, and antithrombotic treatment. Focus areas include left ventricular thrombus, treatment strategies for elderly and frail patients with atrial fibrillation, and the impact of bariatric surgery on hemostasis and thromboembolism. Pulmonary embolism and biomarkers are also studied.

The research group has a broad range of ongoing projects within the field of hemostasis, arterial and venous thromboembolism, as well as antithrombotic treatment.

Regarding arterial thrombosis, current projects concern both the diagnosis and treatment of, and risk associated with, left ventricular thrombus of various origins. There is also a particular interest in treatment strategies for elderly and frail patients with atrial fibrillation and risk of thromboembolism, as well as the effects of bariatric surgery on mechanisms of hemostasis and thromboembolism.

With respect to venous thromboembolism, the current focus is on pulmonary embolism, including characterization of intermediate-high risk patients and treatment choices in this group. We also intend to study relevant biomarkers in several of the aforementioned projects.
